59-year-old loses 30 kilos and becomes a personal trainer

One Gold Coast grandma is proving that it's never too late to get back in shape. 

Carolyn Broomfield, 59, became a personal trainer and opened up her own gym after losing 30 kilos in 10 months. 

And it was a pair of size 24 pants that helped Carolyn finally turn her life around. 

Carolyn had always loved exercise when she was younger, participating in the likes of hockey and athletics.

Carolyn now trains women who are in their forties, fifties and sixties at New Horizon Fitness, which is built on two acres of private gardens in the Gold Coast 

But when the mother-of-three hit her fifties, she started experiencing menopausal symptoms and her weight began to escalate.

It turned into a vicious cycle. The worse Carolyn felt about her body, the more she would eat and drink.

'As soon as I started to put some weight on, I started feeling really horrible about my body,' she told Daily Mail Australia. 

'The more depressed I got the more I ate. I started to drink a lot because I was depressed.'

Carolyn began gaining weight when she started to experience menopausal symptoms in her fifties 

Carolyn was drinking three to four glasses of wine a night, which she said helped silence her negative thoughts, and avoided all exercise.

'I hated going out,' she said. 'I felt so uncomfortable with my body.' 

She eventually tipped the scale at 115 kilos and one day had to buy a pair of size 24 navy pants.  The moment was a wake-up call.  

Carolyn was also starting to have grandchildren, and had just lost a friend to breast cancer who was only 47 years old. 

'I realised I really had to seriously do something about myself, or else I'd be in an early grave,' she said. 

Carolyn never did put on those navy pants. She instead immediately joined a gym and started seeing a personal trainer three times a week.

She began doing strength training and lifting weights, and squeezed in time for jogging or boxing on the days in between.

The grandmother-of-four also began prepping her meals two weeks in advance, replaced alcohol with soda water, and cut out sugar and processed food.

At first the gym was an intimidating place for Carolyn, who said she felt like 'an elephant' working out next to young women who were a size 12 or 14. 

'I totally did not fit in,' Carolyn said. 'I was in my early fifties at a gym with young twentysomethings with the most lovely, beautiful physiques.' 

'It was really difficult for me to get out of my comfort zone and do something completely different, I found that really challenging.' 

But Carolyn, who went to the gym every day, also loved the feeling she got when a workout was done and she could walk out feeling accomplished.

And when her personal trainer suggested Carolyn get certified herself, she jumped at the chance and ended up loving it - despite being the oldest one in her class.

Carolyn also began to study nutrition, earning diplomas in weight loss consulting and food coaching.

After a few years of working at a commercial gym, Carolyn decided she was read to open up her own.

Carolyn now helps older women with their own fitness journeys, even hosting a free core strength class at her gym every Monday night (pictured) 

She had met older women at the gym who felt self-conscious working out around so many young and fit people.

'I saw a niche for training older women who were intimidated and often didn't know where to start,' Carolyn said. 

'They knew they wanted to lose some weight but had no idea what to do. I felt that since I had been where some of these women were, I could help them.'

'I could help these women get their mojo back and start enjoying themselves.'  

Carolyn now trains women who are in their forties, fifties and sixties at New Horizon Fitness, which is built on two acres of private gardens in the Gold Coast. 

The grandmother wanted her gym to be a place where older women could work out in an environment where they wouldn't feel self-conscious or intimidated.

Carolyn said she likes to keep things 'simple and fun' for her clients, and takes a personal interest in each of their health journeys.

And Carolyn has continued to stay on top of her own fitness, still meeting with a personal trainer twice a week as well as boxing and cycling. 

She now eats five to six small meals a day, making sure each one consists of protein, and lets herself enjoy a glass of wine or two on the weekends. 

Carolyn's life has completely changed since her weight loss journey began, from the simple things like being able to tie her shoelaces to finally sleeping well again. 

'I don't get puffed anymore, I was able to ditch the sleeping tablets, and I can have a lot of fun with my grandchildren,' she said. 

'I go out riding on the back of my husband's motorbike, and I feel less stressed. I think exercising has helped my mood and emotions.' 

And Carolyn is continuing to help women find this same balance and peace of mind, one sit-up or lunge at a time.
